Washburn X50 Review

This is my review of the Washburn X50 and X50 Pro FE guitars with the Buzz Feiten tuning system.

Another manufacturer that I think is highly underrated is Washburn Guitars. For 100 years they have been making quality instruments, but since the 80’s Washburn has been known for making killer shredding machines at affordable prices. Gibsons and Fenders are great, but the cost is too high and they just aren’t very versatile. Their cheaper counterparts (Squier and Epiphone) are a laughable joke quality and price wise. In addition there have never been improvements made to essentials such as tuning and intonation or electronics.

It’s funny, even thought you can’t (currently) find a Washburn guitar in any Guitar Center store, you can still find them in small music shops all over. In addition, modern touring bands are using them every day – like Puddle of Mudd, Theory of a Dead Man, Sevendust, Anthrax, Goo Goo Dolls, Sammy Hagar, As I Lay Dying, Def Leppard, Toby Keith, Meatloaf, Kiss, Black Label Society, All-American Rejects, Neil McCoy, Shinedown, Fall Out Boy, Brooks and Dunn, Derek Trucks, Hawthorne Heights, and Breaking Benjamin.

The 2 guitars I’m going to talk about today are the X50 and X50 Pro FE.

Washburn X50 Pro
Washburn X50 Pro FE

You used to be able to get the X-50 Pro for between $400-$500 and and the X-50 Pro sold for $600-700. The X50 Pro comes with a Duncan ’59 reissue humbucker pickup in the next and a Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. The X50 Pro FE comes with EMG 81 and EMG 85 active pickups. The X50 pros have quilted maple tops, and the X50 Pro FE’s have flamed maple tops. Each Washburn guitar features the Buzz Feiten tuning system, which you can read about here. The X50 series also uses Washburn’s patented VCC or “Volume Contour Control” system. Basically the volume control is a coil tap, and when pull it out it splits the humbuckers in half…but the way that the VCC works is that when you back off the volume control, once it reaches 50% the coil tap automatically kicks in chopping the humbucker down to a single coil.

There have been stellar reviews of both models, Washburn posted a 2004 review of the X50 Pro from Guitar World.
Both Harmony Central and Ultimate Guitar reviews were very high. The thing that has amazed me is when watching these models in eBay auctions for a few weeks, most of the auctions received 40+ bids – which is very high for most guitar auctions. Then, once I read of the features (like the electronics and the Buzz Feiten) – I now know why.

Pickups are a very personal choice, and I think that the Duncan Custom Custom and ’59 both are great choices for many guitarists and amp combinations. Lately though, I am very partial to EMG pickups (especially the 81 and 85) because I find that they work like “peas and carrots” with a POD (I have a PodXT Live). The active electronics just seem to give a certain extra “clarity” to everything that comes through my POD. Many players favor 81/85 pickups – like Zakk Wylde.

You don’t see a lot of X50’s on eBay, usually only a few at a time. They don’t sell them new anymore, so this guitar is a little more rare than it used to be. This page will always have the latest live auctions for Washburn X-50 and X50 Pro FE’s, bookmark it now!

There are usually a half dozen for sale on eBay most days, check what auctions are available now by clicking this link.  Prices can be $300 – $600 depending on condition.

If the X50 series isn’t for you – there are hundreds of Washburn guitars on eBay right now in different styles, models, and colors, check them out as well!

Here’s a good YouTube review as well:

My new Fender Thinline 72 RI is Awesome!

This is my new Fender Thinline 72 RI (reissue):

fender-thinline-72-RI-deluxe

The image is stock, I’ll post one of my playing it soon. I used to be a Gibson man, and I was kind of “anti-Fender”. I liked classic rock, metal, 80’s hair bands, modern rock. But the last couple years I’ve been heavy into the blues. It’s funny sometimes – as you age you learn to appreciate different types of music more. For the first time in my life I pretty much (now) understand how and why players use different configurations of Fender and Gibson guitars and amps. Now I use my volume knob (on the guitar), and I used to just play on “10”, and the only use the amp volume. Then again – I used to have solid state amps, and now I have really good boutique tube amps.

I like the Telecaster sound, by my main instrument for awhile now has been my Mexican Tele with a Seymour Duncan little ’59 in the bridge, and a single coil in the neck. There’s something about that configuration that just suits me. It’s not too light, dirty when I want it, but not muddy like a Les Paul. It’s great for nearly any type of music.

Last week I saw a guy on the local Craigslist had a ’72 RI Thinline Tele for sale, but he was willing to trade for the right guitar. One of the guitars he wanted was a Reverend, and I just happened to have one that wasn’t getting much use. In 1972 Fender put out a Thinline Telecaster (that I’ve been able to find) in 2 different types – “deluxe” and “custom”. The deluxe ’72 Tele is unique because it has 4 knobs (like a Gibson), 2 volume, and 2 tone – in addition to 2 “wide range” humbuckers. That, and the fact that the thinline has the signature F-hole tonebox on top for a slightly brighter sound.

So, I decided to setup an appt for a guitar swap – and the guy like my Reverend, and I liked his Tele. It had a C shaped neck a little fatter then my Mexican Tele, but was actually easier to play (for me). So I took it home and cranked it up, and if there’s anything I’ve learned the last few years it’s the fact that every guitar is different. The guy I bought it from said that he switched the pots out for 500K because it was (in his opinion) too “dark”. I don’t know about dark, but I like guitars with the 500K mod because the gain rolloff is different than with standard 250K volum pots.

On my Tele with the lil ’59 Seymour pickup it starts to get dirt around 5 or 6, and progresses up all the way to 10 until it’s full bore. On the new Thinline 72 I don’t start to get dirt until about 8 (on the same rig and pedals), and the sound at “10” on the volume is a bit different (slightly more harsh). The “widerange” humbuckers are not what you’d expect. You’re not going to get a Gibson sound, but it’s not a single coil either. It’s not exactly like a P-90 (or as dark). The best way to describe it is a humbucker that has more clarity (and is more defined). The bridge is really bright, the neck pickup is really deep and ambient.

I love my Tele with the little ’59, but the thing about this Thinline is I can set the bridge pickup at one volume, and the neck pickup at another. Then I can go from neck rhythm to bridge leads with ease. With my other Tele it’s one volume for all.

There’s another Thinline back on the market now called the Thinline 69 RI:

fender-thinline-69-RI

You can see in the image above that the Thinline ’69 is a traditional Tele in both pickups and controls. It has the F-hole cutout, but the neckplate is a 3 bolt (where the ’72 RI is a 4 bolt neck).

I’m grateful to have this as a new addition to my guitar collection, you can find it at musicians friend for about $800 bucks:

Les Paul Menace Guitar

What a beautiful guitar! Gibson has been updating the tried and true standard look of the Les Paul and releasing many special editions specially suited for metal, and the “Menace” is no exception. The Les Paul Menace delivers take-no-prisoners looks and face melting tone for an over-the-top metal performance like no other. Fist inlay and tribal body routings. Mahogany body and maple top. Ebony fretboard. Special Smoky Coils 490R & 498T brass stud humbuckers. Includes Gibson hardshell case.

DiPinto Belvedere Guitar Review

You may not have heard of DiPinto guitars before, but the Belevdere is a throwback to old school guitars of the 60’s with lots of pizazz and flair. Talk about sparkle and plastic! If you’re looking for a budget electric but want something with personality, Belvedere Deluxe by DiPinto Guitars may be exactly what you need. It features a double-layer semi-hollow mahogany body, single f-hole, two-tone finish, massive paddle-shaped headstock and small humbucking pickups. The Belvedere Deluxe’s light, semihollow body provides rich resonance and percussive punch, and its mini ‘buckers deliver fat tone that still has plenty of bite. The three-position pickup-selector switch and master volume and tone controls produce everything from a raucous rockabilly twang to a sultry jazz swing. In overdrive, the Belvedere growls with a vicious bite and howling sustain that are perfect for blues dogs and rock hounds alike.Featuring a comfortable, 22-fret painted maple neck, 24-3/4-inch scale and bound ebony fingerboard, the Belvedere’s neck feels and plays like a real vintage guitar. Although the body looks large, the guitar weighs much less than most hollow and semi-hollow electrics and is comfortable to play for hours on end. The tastefully designed single cutaway provides excellent access to the uppermost frets while it complements the Belvedere’s classic lines. Acoustically the Belvedere guitar is loud and punchy; amplified it sounds immediate and full. The Belvedere’s distinctive retro design, combined with its many usable tones, sets it apart from other instruments on the market. If you want to stand out from the crowd and sound like a star, the Belvedere Deluxe is the best way to get noticed.

Used BC Rich Warlock Guitar

Looking for a used BC Rich Warlock Guitar? You couldn’t find a better bargain if you tried!

If you were reading my post the other day, you know that I sold my Agile 3100 and PRS Santana guitars because I bought a 1991 ESP Horizon (which I LOVE!). The ESP is the first guitar I’ve ever owned that had EMG pickups. Now that I own a PODxt Live, the EMG picks are what I want becuase they make the POD sound sooooo much better (IMHO). So, I’ve searching eBay for different types of used guitars that have EMG active pickups (specifically EMG 81/85’s) in them.

But that’s neither hear nor there, what I wanted to tell you was that I realized how much of a bargain the BC Rich Warlock guitar is. It’s astounding. The BC Rich Warlock is kind of known as a 80’s hard rock heavy metal guitar, but they are great to play – and can be used for any style. The thing that got me was how affordable the used ones are. A new BC Rich Warlock NJ with EMG pickups and Floyd Rose can run you $800. But used, you can get one under $300, and sometimes for $200 or less! Can you believe this? I mean, come on, the BC Rich Warlock’s with EMG 81 and EMG 85 pickups for under $200? The pickups ALONE are worth $200, and that’s not even counting the Floyd Rose and rest of the guitar! I saw a few auctions that had a nice condition used Warlock AND the cool “coffin case” under $300. ‘Nuf said – go fine some deals!

Blueridge BR-243 Acoustic Guitar

The Blueridge BR-243 is a quality guitar, well-made, and full sounding. You may not have appreciation of the vintage acoustic guitar, this reissue pays homage to the great luthier work of the prewar era. Crafted with a select solid spruce top, hand-carved X-bracing, choice solid mahogany back and sides, and a traditional dovetail neck joint for pure Golden Era tone. Expertly applied tortoise binding adorns the body and soundhole. The intricate floral-design pearl and abalone inlay work on the headstock is a touch of fine art. Aged-tone finish completes the vintage look. The slim mahogany neck and comfortable 000-sized body make it a truly enjoyable guitar to play. The Historic Series offers authentic vintage style with strict adherence to the spirit of prewar instruments from the materials used to the ornate inlay work.If you’ve been searching for a Golden Era guitar that isn’t priced like it’s made of gold, then Blueridge guitars are for you. Reminiscent of fine American guitars built prior to WWII, Blueridge guitars are made with the same techniques as their antique counterparts, including many by-hand processes.Like the best instruments, Blueridge guitars aren’t overbuilt; they’re crafted to be light and resonant. Meticulous attention to detail and quality craftsmanship is evident in the traditional, forward-position, hand-carved parabolic X-bracing which allows the solid Spruce top to ring loud and true. Blueridge guitars feature a traditional dovetail neck joint, slim mahogany neck, adjustable truss rod, and butterbean-button, Kluson-style tuning machines with an updated mechanism for modern precision and feel.

ART300 Ibanez Review

The Ibanez ART300 is a killer guitar at a VERY affordable price, excellent looks, and awesome playability. This is my ART300 guitar review.

I picked up the Ibanez ART300 at my local GC because it had this weird scalloped textured top that looked like it had been hand carved, with deep black slick paint on top. I mean it didn’t exactly scream “death metal” (although it could have), so I plugged it into a Marshall to see what came out. The guitar was pretty light, like 5-6 lbs, the action was low and the stock “LoZ” pickups were suprisingly bright and crisp (but not too hot). The neck pickup was nice and warm – and I did play this on both clean and lead settings. I had no problems playing some tasty jazz and blues licks, and this thing really started to sing in bridge position on lead mode through the Marshall for killer ZZ Top, Skynyrd, and even Ozzy tones. I had the gain way up and down, and this guitar could easily play thrash, goth, death metal, classic rock, southern rock, blues, SRV, hair metal, and anything in between from uber-crunch to rhythm backup to Jenny 867-5309. I recommend this guitar – especially at the $399 retail price, you can’t beat this kind of quality and sound in that price range. I’ve seen both brown and grey tops for this model, but I prefer the slick black!

Here’s a younger guitar slinger with his brand new ART300 Ibanez axe on YouTube playing through a Peavey bandit with a few effects.

Getting Daddy a Guitar Gift for Father’s Day, Birthday, or Christmas? I recommend getting him this guitar and a personalized guitar strap!

The ART300 single cutaway offers a modern variation on the set-neck Artist theme at an unprecedented low price. With a set neck joint, mahogany body, beautiful textured maple top that suggests reptilian hide, and Ibanez original active pickups, this sucker's built for the heavy rocker. For over 30 years, the classic Artist design has provided a real, high-quality alternative to the other famous mahogany double humbucker."

PRS Santana – Used Guitar Bargain

If you’re looking for a “used guitar bargain” you can’t go wrong with the Paul Reed Smith or “PRS Santana”.

Every guitar you own can’t cost more than $1,000. We all have to start somewhere, and you can’t beat an affordable backup axe. About a year ago I needed another backup guitar and saw an ad on Craig’s List or a PRS Santana Limited model. I wasn’t that interested in it at the time, but the guy that had it for sale was only a few blocks from my work and he had some pedals I wanted to check out.

When I went over to his house he had his Line 6 pod hooked up to a small crate amp and the PRS Santana plugged in. It was a double humbucker in both the bridge and neck positions with cool “slash” like inlays. The strings wrapped around the tailpiece (a trick used for years by many people on regular tune-o-matic bridges). I’m glad that I got to test it on his POD because I tried various amp models from Fender to Marshall and back. I used “The Rover” preset (Zeppelin) and the one like AC-DC, and another like SRV. If you’re going to buy a guitar you probably already have a good idea of what you want it to sound like, but I strongly suggest you try it dirty and clean through a tube and solid state amp (or amp model). You’ll know right away if it’s got the “crunch” or clean tone you’re looking for.

I bought that PRS Santana electric guitar for the paltry sum of $150, which was a used bargain. It came with a gig bag. I wouldn’t say that it’s the greatest guitar I own, but I wouldn’t say it’s the worst either. It’s a good mid-range guitar that you can get for a very reasonable price used. Check out some of these eBay auctions live right now, you might find a great deal under $200-300, or a higher end version with more features for a bit more.

Ibanez Iceman – Classic Cool Guitar

I just had to write about the new Ibanez Iceman ICT700 I saw at Guitar Center. Everyone remembers the Iceman PS10 made famous by Paul Stanley of KISS. He had a couple, but the one I remember is of course the one with the cracked mirror finish. I distinctly remember seeing him play his solo and “I Still Love You” live in Detroit with that back in 1983. I was kinda shocked when I saw Guitar Center was carrying a white Iceman new for 2008, and it’s only a little over $600. If I was up for a new axe this month – this would be an awesome choice for my (KISS guitar) collection! Not only does it have DiMarzio pickups, but it’s got the fast as hell Wizard II neck and the cool “iceberg” inlays on the neck. Check it out, it might be just the thing to beat the Winter blues!

PRS Swamp Ash Review

You don’t see a lot of “made in America” guitar nowadays, and the PRS Swamp Ash Special is the exception. It’s a beautiful guitar from the hard rock maple neck down to the Seymour Duncay hot rail pickup in the center position. This one’s a keeper!

Here’s a video review of the PRS Swamp Ash special:

The PRS Guitars Swamp Ash Special Electric Guitar is a wonderful guitar to play and it has serious swat. A stylish and functional carved ash body, wide, fat carved maple neck, McCarty neck and bridge pickups, Seymour Duncan Vintage Rails center pickup, 14:1 locking tuners, and flexible PRS electronics. The Swamp Ash Special is the American-made PRS guitar you’ve always dreamed of owning, at a price that makes it possible.
