My new Fender Thinline 72 RI is Awesome!

This is my new Fender Thinline 72 RI (reissue):

fender-thinline-72-RI-deluxe

The image is stock, I’ll post one of my playing it soon. I used to be a Gibson man, and I was kind of “anti-Fender”. I liked classic rock, metal, 80’s hair bands, modern rock. But the last couple years I’ve been heavy into the blues. It’s funny sometimes – as you age you learn to appreciate different types of music more. For the first time in my life I pretty much (now) understand how and why players use different configurations of Fender and Gibson guitars and amps. Now I use my volume knob (on the guitar), and I used to just play on “10”, and the only use the amp volume. Then again – I used to have solid state amps, and now I have really good boutique tube amps.

I like the Telecaster sound, by my main instrument for awhile now has been my Mexican Tele with a Seymour Duncan little ’59 in the bridge, and a single coil in the neck. There’s something about that configuration that just suits me. It’s not too light, dirty when I want it, but not muddy like a Les Paul. It’s great for nearly any type of music.

Last week I saw a guy on the local Craigslist had a ’72 RI Thinline Tele for sale, but he was willing to trade for the right guitar. One of the guitars he wanted was a Reverend, and I just happened to have one that wasn’t getting much use. In 1972 Fender put out a Thinline Telecaster (that I’ve been able to find) in 2 different types – “deluxe” and “custom”. The deluxe ’72 Tele is unique because it has 4 knobs (like a Gibson), 2 volume, and 2 tone – in addition to 2 “wide range” humbuckers. That, and the fact that the thinline has the signature F-hole tonebox on top for a slightly brighter sound.

So, I decided to setup an appt for a guitar swap – and the guy like my Reverend, and I liked his Tele. It had a C shaped neck a little fatter then my Mexican Tele, but was actually easier to play (for me). So I took it home and cranked it up, and if there’s anything I’ve learned the last few years it’s the fact that every guitar is different. The guy I bought it from said that he switched the pots out for 500K because it was (in his opinion) too “dark”. I don’t know about dark, but I like guitars with the 500K mod because the gain rolloff is different than with standard 250K volum pots.

On my Tele with the lil ’59 Seymour pickup it starts to get dirt around 5 or 6, and progresses up all the way to 10 until it’s full bore. On the new Thinline 72 I don’t start to get dirt until about 8 (on the same rig and pedals), and the sound at “10” on the volume is a bit different (slightly more harsh). The “widerange” humbuckers are not what you’d expect. You’re not going to get a Gibson sound, but it’s not a single coil either. It’s not exactly like a P-90 (or as dark). The best way to describe it is a humbucker that has more clarity (and is more defined). The bridge is really bright, the neck pickup is really deep and ambient.

I love my Tele with the little ’59, but the thing about this Thinline is I can set the bridge pickup at one volume, and the neck pickup at another. Then I can go from neck rhythm to bridge leads with ease. With my other Tele it’s one volume for all.

There’s another Thinline back on the market now called the Thinline 69 RI:

fender-thinline-69-RI

You can see in the image above that the Thinline ’69 is a traditional Tele in both pickups and controls. It has the F-hole cutout, but the neckplate is a 3 bolt (where the ’72 RI is a 4 bolt neck).

I’m grateful to have this as a new addition to my guitar collection, you can find it at musicians friend for about $800 bucks:

Used BC Rich Warlock Guitar

Looking for a used BC Rich Warlock Guitar? You couldn’t find a better bargain if you tried!

If you were reading my post the other day, you know that I sold my Agile 3100 and PRS Santana guitars because I bought a 1991 ESP Horizon (which I LOVE!). The ESP is the first guitar I’ve ever owned that had EMG pickups. Now that I own a PODxt Live, the EMG picks are what I want becuase they make the POD sound sooooo much better (IMHO). So, I’ve searching eBay for different types of used guitars that have EMG active pickups (specifically EMG 81/85’s) in them.

But that’s neither hear nor there, what I wanted to tell you was that I realized how much of a bargain the BC Rich Warlock guitar is. It’s astounding. The BC Rich Warlock is kind of known as a 80’s hard rock heavy metal guitar, but they are great to play – and can be used for any style. The thing that got me was how affordable the used ones are. A new BC Rich Warlock NJ with EMG pickups and Floyd Rose can run you $800. But used, you can get one under $300, and sometimes for $200 or less! Can you believe this? I mean, come on, the BC Rich Warlock’s with EMG 81 and EMG 85 pickups for under $200? The pickups ALONE are worth $200, and that’s not even counting the Floyd Rose and rest of the guitar! I saw a few auctions that had a nice condition used Warlock AND the cool “coffin case” under $300. ‘Nuf said – go fine some deals!

Paul Reed Smith PRS 305 review

So PRS has come out with a “strat killer?” You may have seen the Paul Reed Smith 305 in magazines as of late, and snapped your head back to take a look.

First let’s take a step back and talk about the previous PRS “semi-strat” copy – the 513.

PRS 513
The Paul Reed Smith 513

The image above is the PRS 513. Notice how it has “5” single coil pickups. They’ve stacked both the neck and bridge with 2 single coils so you can roll as a humbucker, or use the electronics to split it down to one. Pretty cool I guess, and if you’ve always wanted a PRS with single coil pickups – then voila, problem solved!

It must’ve been only an “ok” solution, because now we have the “305” by PRS. I’m going to show you the stock picture of it, and then the pic on their homepage with Buddy Guy playing one. As far as I can tell they had him play one at their “Paul Reed Smith Days” open house deal, but he’s not actually endorsing one. Like he’s gonna give up the bucks that Fender pays for his sig model strat anyway, LOL.

Paul Reed Smith 305 Maple Neck

Paul Reed Smith 305 review

So the images above are the 305. That’s more like it, huh! I mean the 513 didn’t have the slant pickup – well, it just didn’t have standard “strat” setup – or the obligatory 5 position switch. Also – this is one of the ONLY maple neck PRS guitar that I have (personally) ever seen. They may have made them with the 513 as well. I have to admit – this thing looks stellar. Supposedly 513 means 5 pickups, 13 tone options. 305 means 3 pickups, 5 tone options. They are making it in some cool colors too – like Grandma Hannon Pick, Seafoam Green, and some cool metallics and smokebursts.

You get 22 frets on a 25 1/2″ scale, bird inlays, and a cool “no pickguard” look. You also get the high quality PRS hardware, like the trem and tuners. The question is – what do they play like? What do they sound like? Well, they play like butter of course! Some say the sound is a more warm Strat sound, almost like somebody merged a Les Paul and a Strat into one guitar! I think of it as more of a ballsy, bassy strat sound – which to some might defeat the purpose of getting a strat in the first place (removing the signature squawky single coil sound!).

So – let’s see if we can show you a little bit about how it sounds…here’s Davy Knowles with a video PRS 305 demo actually at Paul Reed Smith’s factory:

He says in the video “love that sound – it’s so big and chunky”. I think that says it all. Even for single coils, it has a big chunky warm round sound. Then I’m thinking – well maybe a lot of that is the amp….so I took a listen to this video demo done at a guitar shop in the UK on a “private stock” version of the 305 through a Matchless:

That’s through a 15 watt amp with no pedals or effects, just the sound of the Matchless Avalon amp and the 305 through it. That was a bit more of the single coil sound that I was looking for. In the last part of the demo they did a good job showing how much better you can do the pinch harmonics on this guitar than a normal strat (because of the better intonation).

Then I watched this video with Mike Seeber, he’s playing through a Mesa. He got much closer to the sounds I thought the 305 would generate, my “strat-like” than anything else I heard:

Probably the best example I have is this one. In this PRS 305 video demo you see him switch from the 305 to a strat, and then back. That’s where you can just see the 305 really just has a voice of it’s own. It’s “strat-like”, and that’s about the best you can say.

Oh wait – before you think you might have made up your mind about how it sounds – listen to Buddy Guy wailing on a PRS 305:

Incredible – isn’t it? I’m going to show you a couple different places you can get one…

This first place is American Musical. The PRS 305 can run you $2,200-2,300 depending on where you get. Of course you can put that on plastic, but at American Musical they have a killer 3 and 5 month payment plan. You can buy the axe – have it shipped to you now, and have it billed to your card in either 3 or 5 payments (I hate to say it, but just like QVC or HSN). Please note, even though the pic below has Rosewood fingerboard, you can usually get either Rosewood or hard rock maple.

PRS Paul Reed Smith 305 Electric Guitar Rosewood fingerboard

Here’s the same thing over at Guitar Center. Difference in price is only $1. Although here you either gotta have enough of a limit on your Visa or MC – or a GC credit card for this bad boy (note the Maple fingerboard in the pic, although you can get maple or Rosewood here too usually):

And if want to save some bucks, check out the Guitar Center used stock, right now they have this killer pink one for only about $2,800:

PRS Santana – Used Guitar Bargain

If you’re looking for a “used guitar bargain” you can’t go wrong with the Paul Reed Smith or “PRS Santana”.

Every guitar you own can’t cost more than $1,000. We all have to start somewhere, and you can’t beat an affordable backup axe. About a year ago I needed another backup guitar and saw an ad on Craig’s List or a PRS Santana Limited model. I wasn’t that interested in it at the time, but the guy that had it for sale was only a few blocks from my work and he had some pedals I wanted to check out.

When I went over to his house he had his Line 6 pod hooked up to a small crate amp and the PRS Santana plugged in. It was a double humbucker in both the bridge and neck positions with cool “slash” like inlays. The strings wrapped around the tailpiece (a trick used for years by many people on regular tune-o-matic bridges). I’m glad that I got to test it on his POD because I tried various amp models from Fender to Marshall and back. I used “The Rover” preset (Zeppelin) and the one like AC-DC, and another like SRV. If you’re going to buy a guitar you probably already have a good idea of what you want it to sound like, but I strongly suggest you try it dirty and clean through a tube and solid state amp (or amp model). You’ll know right away if it’s got the “crunch” or clean tone you’re looking for.

I bought that PRS Santana electric guitar for the paltry sum of $150, which was a used bargain. It came with a gig bag. I wouldn’t say that it’s the greatest guitar I own, but I wouldn’t say it’s the worst either. It’s a good mid-range guitar that you can get for a very reasonable price used. Check out some of these eBay auctions live right now, you might find a great deal under $200-300, or a higher end version with more features for a bit more.

Beautiful Midnight Blue PRS Santana SE and White Agile AL-3100 electric guitars for sale!

**UPDATED**
The PRS SE and Agile 3100 are sold now, but be sure it my Agile guitar new and used review page!

First of all – I’ve purchased a new guitar!  It’s a purple flame early 90’s ESP – and it’s being shipped right now!  It’s got EMG Pickups and a Floyd Rose, I’m excited!  But I paid a LOT to get it, over $800!

Check it out by clicking the picture below…

So I have this new purple beauty on the way – and now I have to sell a few guitar to make up for the difference!  I hate to do this, but sometimes you have to sell a few off to get more expensive ones!  For that reason I listed on eBay just this morning both of these guitars:

If you’re interested in getting a great deal on a quality used guitar, check out those two auctions to get one from my personal collection!  I have bought and sold many, many guitars on eBay – and had nothing but good luck each and every time.

Really Weird Guitars to Die For

I was reading the news this morning when I came across this post about weird guitars. Of course I just HAD to post that her for you! I think that post was compiled from different places across the web since I’d seen one or two of these before. But the rest were new to me, and there are some really cool axes in this bunch. Be sure to visit that page and check them out. Here, I’ll post like 3 of them here to get you started!

Agile Guitar New and Used Review

Agile guitars are a perfect alternative to Gibson Les Paul and Epiphone Les Paul electric guitars. They are much cheaper – and the quality is much better!

**UPDATED* April 2008
I’ve just updated this post and republished it with new info based on the fact that I purchased an Agile 3100 a few months back. The details are at the end of this post…

I don’t know if you’ve heard of Agile Guitars or not, but if you haven’t you’re missing out. I love American made Gibson guitars (don’t we all?), but not everyone can afford the $2-3,000 price tag that comes with it. Everyone wants the features that come along with it…quality, reliability, tone, looks, playability, etc. Of course there’s an entire industry built around copying these famous guitars – the most notable being the Epiphone brand (which Gibson owns). I’ve already written a post about why I hate Epiphone guitars. Mainly it’s because of the shoddy workmanship and quality. I would gladly pay $500-$600 for an Epiphone Les Paul provided it was wired right and I could gig it out without worrying about something going bad on it. Correct me if I’m wrong – but I think Epiphone’s are made in either China or Taiwan.

I’ve read a great deal about import guitars online and hundreds of reviews. The concensus seems to be that in the area of import (non American made) guitars, the highest quality seems to be coming from Korea. This is where I believe the ESP imports are made that seem to be getting rave reviews. Anyway, Agile guitars are an import ‘copy’ brand made in Korea. It seems at the current time the only retailer in the U.S. for them is Rondo Music on the East Coast. If you read some of the Harmony Central Reviews for Agile Guitars, you’ll find that they seem to score unusually high – primarily between 9 and 10 (out of 10). Reading the reviews you’ll see many comments that talk about the AL-2500, AL-2800, AL-3000, and AL-3100 models all being significantly better than Epiphone Les Paul’s in fit, finish, sound, and overall quality.

They have so many models you have lots of choices, and the upper end models even have Grover Tunes, solid mahogany bodies, and alnico pickups. I have talked to several people in other bands who own an Agile LP and they wouldn’t give it up for the world. Some say that the AL LP copy series are even better than the real thing. These guitars go for $300-$400 (which is a steal for their quality), and Rondo Music sells them on their web site, but also on eBay as well. So when you look on eBay you find both new ones through Rondo, as well as used ones sold by individuals. I should mention that they also sell many other copy models, like telecasters, stats, brian may copies, PRS copies, and more! I missed an auction of an AL-2800 with aluminum flight case AND a Dunlop Cry Baby Wah that went for only $300 with FREE shipping!! I could have kicked myself (in fact – I still am!). I will be getting one before the end of this year for sure – and I’ll post some pics and review it (again) here when I do. In the meantime – here’s some eBay auctions for agile guitars ending soon, see if you can find yourself a new axe!

agile 3100 **UPDATE**
April 2008: The picture on the left is of me and my white Agile 3100 with creme binding, solid mahogany body, grover 16×1 tuners and solid mahogany body! It has incredible sound and sustain. I paid $369 for it and I believe shipping was only $15. I’ve been very, very happy with this guitar so far! Comparable Epiphone’s are $750+ and it’s not only 10 times better, it’s every bit as good as an authentic Gibson Les Paul retailing for $3,000+! I had no problem getting this axe to scream metal, sing classic rock, or squeal the blues! You will nt be disappointed with this guitar.
